Watering
Depending on soil types different trees require different amounts of water. In
general everything grows well in Midwest if we
get 1” rain per week.
An easy method for watering trees is to drill four 1/4" holes on the side of a
5-gallon bucket at the bottom. Fill bucket and put next to tree trunk and let
drain. A 2 to 2-1/2” diameter tree will need about 20 to 25 gallons of water if
it hasn’t rained in a week to 10 days. A 3 to 3-1/2" diameter tree will need
about 35 gallons of water.
If tree has been watered and leaves are yellowing in heavy clay soil, sign that
you are over watering tree.
Mature trees need watering in dry conditions. A periodic slow soaking with a
garden hose will keep the tree healthy for year to come.
